Why is Richmond, Virginia one of the best locations to distribute to the United States?

Richmond, the Capital of Virginia, is among America’s oldest cities, yet it is modern and vibrant. Eight presidents were birthed in Virginia. Patrick Henry declared, “Give me liberty or give me death” at its St. John’s Church, leading to the Revolutionary War. Today the revolution is growth! It is centrally located on the East Cost within about a day’s drive of 50% of the U.S. population.

Richmond is only a quick 90 miles from the major metropolitan areas of Washington, DC to the north and Norfolk/ Hampton Roads to the east. Today 18 Fortune 500 companies have their headquarters in Virginia. Virginia has over 8 million people that enjoy world-class event facilities, hotels and entertainment.

Although Richmond and Virginia’s American History is notable the real story is how rapidly it is growing today!

  • Shipments can reach 70% of the U.S. population within 2 days
  • Shipments can reach 50% of the U.S. population within 1 day
  • Norfolk Port is only about and hour and a half away from Richmond.
  • The Richmond Port offers a very affordable alternative for companies to bring product further into the East Coast and avoid congestion.
  • 55% of the U.S. Population lives within a 750-mile radius
  • Richmond is home to the Federal Bank of Richmond one of 12 Federal Reserve Banks.
  • The population of the Richmond MSA exceeds 1,000,000
  • Cultural events and Entertainment reflect its growth into a cosmopolitan city.

Riverside Logistics is licensed as a wholesale distributor of prescription drugs and/or devices in Virginia and in 32 other states.

As a third party logistics (3PL) provider, Riverside Logistics contracts with our customers to handle their warehousing and distribution needs. Some of our customer’s products require us to be licensed not only by our own state, but also by the states we ship our customer’s products. Riverside Logistics is licensed as a wholesale distributor of prescription drugs and/or devices in Virginia and in 32 other states.

Recently, federal legislation known as the Drug Supply Chain Security Act was passed which prohibited states from regulating 3PL’s as wholesale distributors. The FDA is currently developing federal standards for licensing 3PL’s which is expected to be completed in late November 2015. Two states, California and Florida, have already developed their own license requirements for 3PL’s and Riverside Logistics has begun the process of meeting those requirements and applying for the licenses.

Riverside Logistics will continue to monitor both federal and state licensure requirements to ensure we meet the necessary requirements to provide our customers with the most efficient, cost effective services available.

What is a Third Party Logistics Provider (3PL)?

What is a 3PL??

By Rick Holden

A third-party logistics provider (abbreviated 3PL) is a firm that provides outsourced (or “third party”) logistics services for part of, or all of their supply chain management functions. Third party logistics providers typically specialize in integrated operations that include warehousing, transportation , and light assembly services. These services can be scaled and customized to customers’ needs based on market conditions. Often, these services go beyond logistics and include value-added services related to the production or procurement of goods.

There are many advantages to engaging a 3PL provider. These include;

  • Cost and time savings- A 3PL provider can meet the technical and equipment requirements in a faster and more cost efficient way than a manufacturer or distributor could do for itself. As logistics is the core competency of third party logistics providers they possess better know how and a greater expertise in providing supply chain solutions to their customers.

  • Low capital commitment- When contracting with a 3PL it is no longer necessary for the client to own its own warehouse facilities or transportation assets. This lowers the amount of capital required for the client’s business. This is particularly beneficial if a company has high variations in warehouse capacity utilization, because a bad capacity utilization ratio at equal fixed cost (for warehouse) will reduce a company’s profitability.

  • Focus- The outsourcing of logistics departments permits the company to focus even more on their core business. Manufacturers and distributors want to remain as competitive as possible. Allowing the focus of the organization to remain with the products it sells will enable the company who relies on a 3PL relationship to get more updated and relevant products to market faster and less expensively.

  • Flexibility- Third party logistics providers can provide a much higher level flexibility and scalability. When manufacturers and distributors contract with a 3PL it allows then to offer a much larger variety of services than the clients could provide for themselves.  In addition, the 3PL customer gets to utilize more flexible resources in labor, space and equipment. Essentially fixed costs are reduced and turned into variable costs.

As many companies would admit, logistics is not their core competency. These companies often do not have the time, resources or expertise to adapt their equipment and systems as quickly as necessary.   By contracting with a 3PL it allows these manufacturers and distributors a unique advantage over their competition as they are able to get the most efficient supply chain while still keeping the focus of the organization on what it does well.

Riverside Logistics Participates In the Inaugural RVA LogistXGames

Riverside Logistics joined seven other teams from the region’s top logistics firms to compete in the 2015 RVA LogistXGames. The friendly but fierce competition included events similar to those performed daily in the logistics work environment…but with fun twists. Events included the Pallet Puzzle Sprint, Pallet Jack Relay, Pick/Pack Hurdle and Box Put. Teamwork, talent, efficiency and speed were all essential components for success.

Sponsored by CBREI/Richmond, the Community College Workforce Alliance (CCWA) and the Virginia Port Authority, the event is designed to showcase the talents of employees in this business sector, as well as emphasize the importance of logistics and distribution to the region. The proceeds, which surpassed $10,000.00, will support workforce development programs available through the Community College Workforce Alliance.

Michael Kenny, Director of Warehouse Operations at Riverside Logistics, organized the Riverside team and was pleased with their results. At the conclusion of the event Michael stated, “This was the first time we participated in such an event. It gave our guys an opportunity to show off some of their many skills. We didn’t win but according to one of the founders of the program, our speed and teamwork on the obstacle course led to one of the fastest completion times he had ever seen! It was great fun and the team is looking forward to participating again next year.”
